CSIF Spring 2008 Workshops
The CSIF has released their current workshop schedule. Workshops run at beginner to intermediate levels & focus on a variety of subjects from basic camera, editing, directing, scriptwritng and much more. If you are interested in multiple workshops, it is worthwhile to become a CSIF member. Associate Membership is an annual fee of $40; members receive discounts on workshops & CSIF events, voting rights, digital newsletters and our quarterly Newsletter. UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:
Lights Camera Action
Saturday April 5, Sunday April 6
10am-5pm
This two day workshop will examine the 5W's (who, what, where, why, when) and the "HOW" of the motion picture camera, exposure, lens and light filtration, and the basics of lighting. Topics will include how to operate, thread and use 16mm and Super 8 camera's, exposure and the use of camera filters and lighting gels. The emphasis is on encouraging participants to understand film and its tools in order to successfully photograph their first film.

Super 8 Transfer
Saturday April 12
2 sessions: Morning- 10am-1pm; Afternoon - 2pm-5pm
Learn to use the CSIF's Video WorkPrinter-XP Super 8 transfer machine. Transfer your Super 8 film and achieve stunning, ultra high quality transfers of both regular 8mm and super 8mm film to NTSC video.

Lighting for Film and Video
Saturday April 19, Sunday April 20
10am-5pm
Using the CSIF's lighting and grip equipment, this hands-on, two day workshop will introduce participants to location lighting techniques and procedures with the focus being practical solutions to a variety of location lighting problems.

Editing Film and Video: Final Cut Pro 6
Saturday April 26, Sunday April 27
10am-5pm
Day 1: Covers basic setup and organization of workspace. Participants will have the opportunity to learn these skills hands-on in the CSIF's edit suite. Everyone will leave with the ability to make a cut.
Day 2: A more intensive look at the capabilities of Final Cut Pro. This will include professional color correction and animated titling. You will also learn media management, file organization and speed tricks.

Screenwriting: The Writers Block
Saturday May 3 (10am-5pm), Thursday May 15 (7pm-10pm)

An introductory screenwriting workshop that will touch on the basic structural elements and definitions of screenplays through discussion, Q & A and reading, viewing and analysis of film scenes. The primary focus will be on in-class writing and discussion in an effort to flush out your creative film concepts and ideas.

Independent Producing

This workshop will walk you through the steps to success, from the ABC's of running a business in Calgary to the complexities of trying to manage it all on your own.

Directing Film
Saturday May 24, Sunday June 1
10am-5pm
Participants are introduced to the roles and responsibilities of the independent film director and focuses on the realities of low-budget independent filmmaking.Participants will gain insight into the working relationships between the director and other key personnel involved with the production.

Sound Edit and Mixing on Nuendo
Saturday May 31, Sunday June 1
10am-5pm
This workshop is geared towards the independent filmmaker, with a focus on the proper set-up of a Nuendo project. We will discuss workflow for both video and film finishes. We cover the stages of sound editing, beginning with i) importing rough soundtracks from the picture edit, ii) dialogue, and iii) using the CSIF sound effects library.

Directing Actors
Saturday June 7, Sunday June 8
10am-5pm
This workshop will focus on the scene breakdown in terms of understanding its emotional objective in relationship to the story as a whole, and then clarifying the emotional beats and transitions of a scene. This two-day workshop will focus on directing the actor by learning effective and practical communication tools.

Special Make-up Effects - Simple Gelatin Prosthetics
Saturday June 14, Sunday June 15. Enrollment deadline May 27.
10am-5pm
Jeff Walker is a former Make-up FX artist who spent 5 years working in the industry in Vancouver. He will use his experience to provide step by step, hands on instruction for creating and applying simple gelatin prosthetics such as bullet wounds, scars, and cuts.It will also cover various techniques including mold making, sculpting and application.The cost of all materias are covered in the workshop's enrollment fee, and as part of the workshop, the participants will recieve their own sculpting make-up kits ot keep.

Introduction to After Effects

This workshop is geared towards the person with absolutely no experience with Adobe After Effects, and will introduce you to the main concepts of this complex software through hands-on excercises.

Handmade Film - Hand Processing Super 8 Film
Saturday June 28
This hands-on workshop will introduce filmmakers to the craft of hand processing black and white 16mm and Super 8 film. Each participant will be given a roll of Super 8 film to shoot, hand-develop, manipulate and edit. All films will be screened at the end of the workshop. This workshop is perfect for the person who wants the ultimate creative control over their project. Film stock and chemicals are included in the price of the workshop.
