ADOPT-A-COMPETITOR PROGRAM
The Sixth Honens International Piano Competition will run October 22 to November 6 2009. The Adopt-A-Competitor Program invites six elementary schools to "adopt" one of the 21 Quarterfinalists of the Competition.
Students will be inspired to achieve their dreams by hearing and meeting young world-class concert artists in their 20’s who are accomplishing amazing things. This will open the eyes of students to ideas and people they wouldn’t meet every day. Music crosses all cultural borders. It is a language everyone speaks. A personal relationship with these young artists makes music more approachable and having a vested interest in a particular pianist will excite students' interest in music. This program is offered to schools free of charge.
THE PROGRAM
Students will host their "adopted" pianist at their own school. Each session will include a 40 minute concert presentation by the artists in the school auditorium, followed by question and answer session, where students will have the opportunity to learn more about the life of the artist and culture from which they come.
Information about the competition, music and artists' background will be provided to teachers and students prior to the visit to enhance the students’ experience with the musicians. Students will be able to follow their competitor's progress during the Competition through audio clips on the Honens website, and communicate through blogs set up for each school and their competitor.
TIMELINE
The deadline for applications is March 20. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-April, and schools will be introduced to their “adopted” competitor in early September. Students will be encouraged to contact their competitor prior to their arrival in Calgary.
School visits by the “adopted” competitors will take place Wednesday October 14 through Friday October 16, with one session available each morning and afternoon. Flexibility of scheduling is desirable. Honens will arrange for a grand piano to be delivered to your school for the event. There is no cost to the school.
Teachers are asked to complete a program evaluation upon completion of the project.
Applications are available at honens.com.
